Rebuilding Khan
N. Khan’s life changed when he contracted hepatitis C. 2 years ago this father of 7 was considered a success: he had worked hard all his life as a builder and built his home with his own hands, his two older daughters we married, his sons were in school and the youngest girls attending a madrassa. .Hep C felled him. Subsequent TB brought him further down. The raging diabetes that followed, left him a shadow of the strong, proud man he once was. The family saw their hard earned life crumble before their eyes. Khan could not go out to work anymore, and faced with crippling medical bills, The two older boys, 20 and 16 at the time (2 years ago) dropped out of school. Khan’s wife (who contracted TB from him) is in recovery, but his diabetes has made his own recovery a long and difficult journey.
The uplift strategy
- A fridge: The immediate focus is to stabilise Nawar’s health. While the mercury is hitting worldwide records in Karachi this summer, this family does not own a fridge. Nawar has to store his insulin with neighbours, making access difficult. L-O-V-E is helping the family purchase a fridge, which will be half funded by them.
- This family of 7 is currently surviving on the $100 a month earned by their eldest son, the younger having recently lost his job in a plastic’s factory. By providing them with monthly food rations and a medical allowance, we hope to provide the family with some breathing room, and the opportunity to
- Get their youngest son back in school at least part-time, to allow him to finish his secondary schooling.
- A full medical review with our network of volunteer Medical practitioners: we hope to help develop a successful and long-term strategy to get Nawar back on his feet.
What we need:
- $100 to help the family purchase a fridge
- $35 a month to provide the family would food support ($420/year)
- $35 a month to help with medicine (mainly insulin) ($420/year)
- $100 to get the younger son back into school part time for a year
